Why the Consultation Decides Everything
Hair extensions are not a product you buy, they are a service that is designed around your specific head of hair. Two clients asking for the same photo can need completely different methods, different amounts of hair and different placement, because their natural density, hair health and daily routine are different.

The uncomfortable truth: a salon that will book you a full head of extensions over the phone, without seeing your hair, is guessing. Sometimes the guess is fine. When it is not, you have paid for the mistake.
Step 1: Assessing Your Own Hair
Before anything about extensions is discussed, your stylist looks at what you already have. Four things matter most.
Natural Density
How much hair you have determines how much can safely be added and how well it will be hidden. Sparse hair cannot conceal a heavy install, no matter how skilled the fitting.

Hair Health and Elasticity
Extensions place ongoing tension on the roots that carry them. Hair that is currently breaking needs to be repaired first, not loaded up.

Step 2: Colour Matching — Properly
More extensions are given away by colour than by bulk. The two mistakes are matching against the roots instead of the lengths, and matching under artificial salon lighting.
Your roots are almost always deeper than your mid-lengths and ends, so matching there puts the extension colour a shade or two too dark against the hair it actually sits beside. Matching happens against mid-lengths and ends, in natural daylight, held against your own hair while it moves.
If your colour is multi-tonal — highlights, balayage, anything dimensional — the match is built by blending several shades across the wefts or strands so the dimension carries through. This is the part that a single-shade set bought online can never replicate, and it is most of the reason those sets look obvious.
Worth knowing: if you are planning a colour change, do the colour first and the extensions second. Matching to a colour you are about to abandon wastes the match.
Step 3: Choosing the Method
Method is a recommendation, not a menu choice. Your stylist matches it to your density, your goals and your maintenance appetite.

Step 4: Mapping the Placement
This is the step clients rarely realise is happening, and the one that separates an invisible install from an obvious one.
Head Shape
Rows follow the curve of your head. Straight rows on a curved head is what creates bulk at the sides.
Perimeter Setback
Rows sit far enough in from the hairline and nape that they stay covered when hair moves or is pulled back.
Parting Allowance
Your usual parting is left clear so nothing shows in the one place you look every morning.
Updo Test
If you wear your hair up, placement is planned so a ponytail does not expose the lowest row.
Density Gradient
More hair through the mid-sections, less at the perimeter, so the blend reads as your own growth.
Blend Cut Plan
Where the extensions will be cut into your natural hair is decided now, not improvised at the end.
Step 5: The Honest Quote
Only at this point can anyone give you a real number. Extension pricing has three variables — the method, how much hair you need, and the length of that hair — and all three are settled by the previous four steps.
Your quote should cover the hair itself, the fitting, the blend cut, and what maintenance visits will cost you every six to ten weeks. That last figure is the one people forget to ask about and then resent later, so we put it on the table upfront.
You should leave the consultation knowing the method, the colour plan, the total cost, the fitting time and the ongoing maintenance rhythm. If any of those are still vague, the consultation was not finished.

Four small things make the half hour far more useful.
Come With Clean, Dry Hair
Density and fall are much easier to assess on hair in its natural state than on a fresh blow-wave or day-three hair.
Wear It How You Normally Wear It
Not styled specially for the appointment. Your stylist is planning around your real routine, not a one-off.
Bring Reference Photos
Two or three images of the length and density you want. It is the fastest way to align expectations and hear what is realistic.
Know Your Colour History
Recent bleaching, box dye or chemical treatments all affect what is safe. Being upfront protects your hair.
