Sydney's Longest-Running Japanese Straightening Specialist

Not every salon offering Japanese Thermal Reconditioning has spent two decades perfecting it. Pierre Haddad Hair has been specialising in this precision service since 2003 — before most salons in Sydney had even heard of the technique.

Over 20+ years and thousands of transformations, we have refined our approach to Japanese straightening into a process that is as safe as it is precise. Your hair is assessed thoroughly before treatment begins, and we only proceed if your hair is in the right condition for optimal results.

That level of care is earned through experience — not marketing.

Sydney's Original Japanese Thermal Reconditioning Specialist

Pierre Haddad Hair has been performing Japanese Thermal Reconditioning in Sydney since 2003, when the technique was virtually unknown in Australia.

While competitors have entered the market in recent years, the level of precision and accumulated expertise that comes with over two decades of dedicated practice cannot be quickly replicated.

Japanese Thermal Reconditioning is one of the most technically demanding services in professional hairdressing.

The chemistry involved is unforgiving: the timing of the solution, the temperature and speed of the flat iron and the sectioning pattern all need to be calibrated precisely to the individual client's hair porosity, density and history.

A single misjudgement leads to over-processed or uneven results that take months to correct.

That’s why experience is the technical foundation of the outcome.

For more than 20 years, Pierre Haddad Hair has performed Japanese hair straightening treatments on thousands of clients across the Sydney CBD. We’ve catered to first-timers with naturally curly hair to long-term clients who have maintained their straight results through regular new-growth applications.

That depth of practice means our specialists have encountered and resolved virtually every variation of hair type, chemical history and texture challenge that walks through our doors.

Place your hair in the hands of the most experienced Japanese thermal reconditioning specialists in Sydney.

Is Japanese Thermal Reconditioning Right for Your Hair?

Japanese Thermal Reconditioning delivers a permanent result, so the consultation stage is as important as the treatment itself. Every client receives a personalised assessment at their consultation, and our specialists will always advise honestly if a different treatment would serve you better.

The 5-point suitability guide:

  • Ideal candidates have very curly, coily, frizzy or resistant hair The treatment was specifically developed for hair that is difficult to control, holds curl strongly, or reverts quickly in humidity.
  • Thick or high-density hair Japanese Thermal Reconditioning was designed with dense, resilient hair in mind. The solution and heat process penetrate coarser textures particularly well, producing the signature glass-like result the technique is known for.
  • Colour-treated hair If your hair has been coloured, highlighted or toned, Japanese straightening can still be performed, but the timing, history and current condition of the hair must be assessed carefully. Hair that has been bleached, over-processed or is structurally compromised may not be suitable. We do not recommend this treatment on hair that has been bleached to a high lift (level 9–10) without a specialist assessment.
  • Previously chemically straightened or relaxed hair If you have had a chemical relaxer or another straightening treatment in the past, let your stylist know at the time of booking. The interaction between existing chemical treatments and the Japanese reconditioning solution needs to be carefully evaluated, though in many cases, the service can proceed safely with adjusted timing.
  • Not recommended for severely damaged or over-processed hair If your hair is already breaking, extremely porous, or significantly weakened from repeated chemical processing, Japanese Thermal Reconditioning is unlikely to produce the desired result and could cause further damage. In these cases, our specialists will recommend a strengthening treatment pathway first, and will always tell you so honestly before any service begins.

If you’re still unsure, our consultation is the best place to find out. Your stylist will assess your hair in person and give you a clear, honest recommendation.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment and Care for Your Hair Afterwards

Japanese Thermal Reconditioning is a permanent service, and its longevity depends on both the precision of application and the care taken in the days immediately following your appointment. The instructions below apply to all clients.

Pre-appointment Care

Before your appointment:

  • Arrive with clean, freshly washed hair.

Unlike some treatments, Japanese Thermal Reconditioning works best on hair that has been washed the morning of or the day before your appointment — free of dry shampoo, heavy oils, serums or styling products. Product buildup can interfere with the solution's even penetration.

  • Avoid applying any deep conditioning or protein treatments in the week before your appointment.

These can temporarily alter the hair's porosity and affect how the reconditioning solution absorbs.

  • Come prepared for a longer appointment.

Depending on your hair's length and density, the process typically takes 3–5 hours. Plan your day accordingly. This is a precision service that cannot be rushed.

  • Disclose your full chemical history at booking.

Colour, bleach, previous relaxers, keratin treatments. Your stylist uses this information to calibrate the treatment correctly and protect your hair's integrity throughout.

Post-appointment Care

After your appointment:

  • Do not wash your hair for a minimum of 48 hours. This is non-negotiable. Water interferes with the bonding process while the hair is still setting into its new structure. Avoid sweat, rain and steam during this window as well.
  • Do not tie, clip, or pin your hair for at least one week. Any crease, kink or indentation created in the hair while it is still setting will become permanent. Wear your hair down and loose for the first 7 days without exception.
  • Switch permanently to a sulphate-free, sodium chloride-free shampoo. Both sulphates and sodium chloride accelerate the breakdown of the treated hair structure. Pierre Haddad's sulphate-free shampoo range is formulated to preserve straightening results and is available in-salon and online →
  • Avoid salt water and chlorinated pools for at least one week post-treatment. After the initial period, always rinse hair with fresh water before and after ocean or pool exposure.
  • Schedule your new-growth application as needed. The treated portion of your hair remains permanently straight. As your natural hair grows out, new-growth applications maintain the seamless result. Most clients return every 4–6 months, depending on their growth rate. Book your next appointment →

The Process

How Japanese Thermal Reconditioning Works — Step by Step

This is a multi-stage, precision service. The full appointment typically takes 4–6 hours depending on hair length, density and natural texture. Here is what happens at each stage.

1

Consultation & Assessment

Your stylist evaluates your hair's condition, history (colour, chemicals, previous treatments) and determines whether Japanese straightening is suitable. Not all hair types are candidates — and we will tell you honestly.

2

Clarifying Wash

The hair is washed with a deep-cleansing shampoo to remove all build-up before treatment begins.

3

Straightening Solution

A specialised Japanese straightening solution is applied section by section to break down the hair's natural disulphide bonds — the chemical structure that gives your hair its curl.

4

Processing Time

The solution processes for a controlled period based on your hair's texture and resistance.

5

Flat-Iron Sealing

Your stylist flat-irons the hair in precise sections at the correct temperature to lock the bonds in their new, straight alignment.

6

Neutralising & Sealing

A neutralising solution is applied to reform and stabilise the restructured bonds. The hair is finished, dried and sealed.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The treated portion of hair remains permanently straight. New growth will retain your natural texture.
This is a detailed, precision service that can take several hours depending on hair length and density.

Japanese Thermal Reconditioning (also called Japanese hair straightening) is a permanent straightening system that chemically restructures the hair's internal bonds using a specialised solution and controlled flat-ironing. The result is permanently straight, glass-smooth hair that lasts until new growth appears.

Yes. The portion of hair that has been treated remains permanently straight. As new hair grows from the root, it will retain your natural texture — this is managed with maintenance appointments on the new growth only.

Japanese Thermal Reconditioning permanently restructures the hair's internal bonds — the results are truly permanent for the treated hair. Keratin treatment is semi-permanent, reducing frizz and adding smoothness for 3–4 months. Japanese straightening is the more committed, long-term option.

For the first 72 hours after treatment, avoid tying, pinning or wetting your hair. Use sulphate-free shampoos only. Avoid chlorine, salt water and excessive humidity exposure. Your stylist will provide a full written aftercare guide at your appointment.

We strongly recommend not colouring your hair within 2 weeks before or immediately after the treatment. Colour services can be done after the hair has fully settled (typically 2–4 weeks post-treatment). Your stylist will advise the best timing.

Pricing depends on hair length, density and the number of treatment zones required. We offer a complimentary consultation where your stylist will assess your hair and provide a precise cost estimate before any commitment.

Pierre Haddad has specialised in Japanese Thermal Reconditioning since 2003 — making us one of Australia's longest-running specialists in this precision service. With over two decades of technique refinement and thousands of transformations, we bring a level of mastery that newer salons simply cannot match.

When performed by an experienced specialist on suitable hair, Japanese Thermal Reconditioning does not cause damage. The key is a thorough pre-treatment assessment — something Pierre Haddad has honed over 20+ years of practice. We will only proceed if your hair is healthy enough to achieve safe, beautiful results.
