Smoothing Treatment Aftercare:
How to Make Keratin, Nanoplasty and Hair Botox Last Longer

Your treatment is only half the result. What you do in the first 72 hours, and the shampoo you buy afterwards, decides the other half.

Aftercare in Practice

The difference between getting eight weeks out of a keratin treatment and getting a full three months is almost never the treatment. It is the shampoo. Aftercare is the half of the equation clients control entirely, and it is the half most people are never properly briefed on before they leave the salon.

The First 72 Hours: The Critical Window

Smoothing treatments are not finished when you leave the salon. The formula continues setting into the hair structure for up to three days, and almost every aftercare rule in the first stretch exists to protect that process.

Do Not Wash It

Up to 72 hours for keratin and nanoplasty. Water interrupts the formula before it has fully bonded. Your stylist will confirm the exact window.

No Ties, Clips or Buns

Anything that bends the hair can set a kink into it permanently at this stage. Wear it down and loose.

No Tucking Behind Ears

The same reason. A crease behind the ear on day one can still be there on day thirty.

Sleep Carefully

Loose and flat. A silk or satin pillowcase helps, and no sleeping on damp hair.

Skip the Gym Sweat

Heavy sweating at the scalp acts like washing. Push the intense sessions out a couple of days if you can.

No Colour Yet

Colour and smoothing need to be spaced. Generally at least two weeks after keratin.

If you take one thing away: the 72-hour window costs you three days of inconvenience and buys you months of result. It is the highest-return rule in the whole guide.

Products to Use vs Avoid

This is where most treatments quietly die. Sulphates are detergents, and they strip a smoothing treatment considerably faster than they strip dirt.

Use Avoid
Shampoo ✓ Sulphate-free, sodium chloride-free ✗ Sulphates, clarifying, anti-dandruff
Conditioner Sulphate-free, mid-lengths to ends Heavy silicone build-up formulas
Weekly A nourishing mask or gloss ✗ Deep-cleansing detox masks
Styling Heat protectant, lightweight serum Products with drying alcohols
Dry shampoo Sparingly, at the roots only Daily use — it builds up fast
Water Fresh water rinse after swimming ✗ Leaving chlorine or salt in

Read the back of the bottle rather than the front. “Keratin-safe” on the label means nothing legally; the ingredient list showing no sodium lauryl sulphate, no sodium laureth sulphate and no sodium chloride means everything.

Heat Styling Rules Post-Treatment

The pleasant surprise of a good smoothing treatment is how little heat you need afterwards. Hair that dries close to straight on its own does not need twenty minutes with a straightener, and every session you skip extends the result.

When you do use heat: always a protectant first, a moderate temperature rather than the maximum setting, and one pass per section rather than three. Repeatedly ironing the same section at high heat is what degrades a treatment fastest.

In the first week, ease off entirely if you can. After that, normal styling is fine within those limits.

Before & After

Hair that still looks like this three months later is almost always hair that was looked after properly in the first three days.

Results shown are from services performed at Pierre Haddad Hair Management, Sydney CBD. Individual results vary with hair type, condition and aftercare.

Swimming, Gym and Everyday Life

None of this means changing your life. It means a couple of small habits.

Before You Swim

Wet your hair with fresh water first. Hair that is already saturated absorbs far less chlorine or salt.

After You Swim

Rinse thoroughly with fresh water as soon as you can, then condition. This is the single biggest lifestyle factor.

At the Gym

Sweat at the scalp is salty water. Rinse rather than full-wash after heavy sessions where you can.

In the Sun

UV degrades smoothing treatments the same way it fades colour. A hat on long beach days is genuinely useful.

What We Recommend From the Shop

You do not have to buy from us, but you do have to buy sulphate-free. These are the ones we use and stock, with what each is actually for.

Keratin Infused Shampoo 500ml — $45

The everyday sulphate-free wash for smoothed and coloured hair. This is the core purchase after any keratin or nanoplasty treatment.

Keratin Infused Conditioner 400ml — $38

Pairs with the shampoo. Mid-lengths to ends only, and keep it off the scalp.

Snaplex Step 3 — $25

At-home bond maintenance. Useful for hair that has been through both colour and smoothing.

Charcoal Revitalising Treatment 250ml — $45

The weekly step if your scalp gets congested, or if you live somewhere with hard water.

Silicone Shampoo Brush — $19.50

Cleans the scalp properly without needing a harsher shampoo to do it.

Charcoal Revitalising Shampoo 500ml — $45

The alternative sulphate-free wash if build-up rather than dryness is your issue.

Treatment-by-Treatment Differences

The rules above cover all three. These are the places they diverge.

Keratin Nanoplasty Hair Botox

Aftercare, Answered

How long after a keratin treatment can I wash my hair?+
Most professional formulas recommend waiting up to 72 hours before washing, though your stylist will confirm the exact timeframe for the formula used on your hair.
What shampoo should I use after a keratin treatment?+
A sulphate-free and sodium chloride-free shampoo is essential to protect your results. This single change makes more difference to longevity than anything else you do.
How do I care for my hair after a nanoplasty treatment?+
Follow your stylist's specific wash-window instructions, switch to sulphate-free products, minimise heat styling, and avoid tying hair up too soon after treatment.
Does hair botox need the same aftercare as keratin?+
Not exactly. Hair botox does not carry the same strict washing window, because it is not a texture-altering treatment. The sulphate-free rule still applies.
Can I swim after a keratin or nanoplasty treatment?+
Yes, but chlorine and salt water shorten how long the treatment lasts. Wet your hair with fresh water before swimming and rinse thoroughly afterwards.
How do I make my keratin treatment last longer?+
Use sulphate and sodium chloride-free products, minimise heat styling, and avoid chlorine and salt water exposure where you can. A three-month gloss also helps.
Can I tie my hair up right after a smoothing treatment?+
It is generally recommended to avoid tying hair up for a period after treatment, as this can set kinks into hair that is still stabilising.
What ingredients should I avoid in shampoo after a keratin treatment?+
Avoid sulphates, sodium chloride, and any clarifying or deep-cleansing formulas. Those are the ones that strip the treatment fastest.
Does heat styling affect how long a smoothing treatment lasts?+
Yes. Excessive heat styling without a protectant degrades the treatment faster over time. You will also need far less heat than before, which helps.
What products does Pierre Haddad recommend for aftercare?+
Sulphate and sodium chloride-free shampoos and conditioners, such as our Keratin Infused range, along with the Charcoal Revitalising range for added scalp benefits.
How soon can I colour my hair after a smoothing treatment?+
Generally at least two weeks after keratin, and your stylist's specific guidance for nanoplasty. Sequencing matters, so plan both appointments together.
