Is Keratin Treatment Good for Your Hair?
Answering the Most Common Questions
Does it damage hair? How long does it really last? Straight answers to what Sydney clients actually ask us.
Frizz to Finish
Keratin in the Chair
“Will it wreck my hair?” is the first question almost every client asks before booking a keratin treatment, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. The honest version is that a professional keratin treatment strengthens hair rather than damages it — but the outcome depends almost entirely on the formula used and the person applying it, which is exactly why experiences vary so wildly between salons.

The Short Answer
Yes — when it is professionally applied, keratin treatment is good for your hair. It works by infusing keratin protein into the hair fibre, which reduces frizz, smooths the cuticle and enhances shine. Keratin is not a foreign substance being forced onto your hair; it is the protein your hair is already largely made of, topped back up.
The caveat matters as much as the answer. A professional keratin service uses a quality formula, matched to your hair type, applied at the correct heat, by someone who has done it thousands of times. A cheap keratin treatment does none of those things, and that is where the horror stories come from.
Worth being clear about: almost every negative keratin story we hear in the salon traces back to one of two things — a low-quality formula, or an inexperienced application. Very rarely the treatment itself.
Does Keratin Treatment Damage Hair?
Properly applied professional keratin treatment is designed to strengthen rather than damage hair. The confusion comes from the fact that keratin involves heat, and heat has a reputation. But the heat in a keratin service is controlled, brief and applied to hair that has been coated in a protective protein formula — a very different proposition to daily straightening on bare hair.
Here is what a keratin treatment does and does not do:
| Claim | Reality |
|---|---|
| Strips or bleaches your hair | ✗ No — keratin adds protein, it does not remove pigment or lift colour |
| Permanently changes hair structure | ✗ No — it coats and smooths, and gradually washes out |
| Causes breakage on healthy hair | ✗ Not when applied correctly |
| Reduces frizz and daily heat styling | ✓ Yes — and less daily heat means less cumulative damage |
| Works on colour-treated hair | ✓ Yes — often improves shine on coloured hair |
| Safe on fine or thin hair | ✓ Yes — when the formula strength is matched to the hair |
The one genuine risk is over-processing: applying keratin to hair that is already compromised, or using excessive heat to seal it. That is a judgement call your stylist makes at consultation, and it is why we sometimes recommend a repair treatment first and keratin second.
How Long Does It Last — and What Shortens It?
Results typically last around three months, depending on hair type and aftercare. Coarse or very frizzy hair sometimes holds it slightly longer; fine hair and frequent washing shorten it.
The single biggest factor is your shampoo. Sulphates and sodium chloride strip the treatment measurably faster than anything else you do, and swapping to a sulphate-free and sodium chloride-free shampoo is the difference between getting eight weeks and getting a full three months. Chlorine and salt water accelerate fade too, so rinse with fresh water as soon as you can after a swim.
Keratin also grows out softly. There is no hard line where treated hair meets new growth, so there is no awkward stage that forces you to rebook before you are ready.
Keratin vs Nanoplasty vs Hair Botox
Neither keratin nor nanoplasty is universally better — they suit different needs. This is the quickest way to see which one your hair is asking for.
| Feature | Professional Keratin | Nanoplasty | Hair Botox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | ✓ Frizz control & shine | Smoothing + repair | Deep repair |
| How long it lasts | Around 3 months | 4–8 months | 3–4 weeks |
| Humidity resistance | ✓ Strong | ✓ Strong | Limited |
| Repairs internal damage | Surface conditioning | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes — most |
| Best for | Frizz, humidity, everyday manageability | Frizz-prone hair also wanting repair | Brittle, over-processed hair |
A rough rule: if the problem is how your hair behaves, keratin. If the problem is how your hair is, start with repair.

Why Do Results Vary So Much Between Salons?
This is the question underneath all the others. Two people can book “a keratin treatment” and have completely different experiences. Four things account for almost all of that difference.
The Formula
Keratin formulas are not interchangeable. Cheap products cut corners on protein quality and rely on harsher sealing chemistry to compensate. The bottle matters as much as the technique.
- Protein quality varies enormously between brands
- Cheaper formulas fade faster and smell stronger
- We select formula strength per client, not per price point
The Application
Keratin is applied in fine sections, and evenness is everything. Rushed, thick sectioning leaves patchy results that look worse than untreated hair.
- Fine sectioning gives an even finish
- Rushed application is the most common cause of patchiness
- Experience shows in the parts you cannot see
The Heat Setting
Sealing temperature has to be matched to hair condition. Too low and it will not hold. Too high and you risk the damage everyone is worried about.
- Adjusted for porosity and existing damage
- Fine and bleached hair needs a lower setting
- This is the step that separates good salons from cheap ones
The Consultation
The most important part happens before anything is applied. Colour history, porosity, elasticity and what you actually want the finish to look like.

In the Salon
Before & After
Frizz-prone hair becomes smooth, glossy and humidity-resistant — without losing its natural movement or ending up looking flat.

Aftercare That Protects Your Investment
Keratin aftercare is simple, and the first three days do most of the work.
Wait 72 Hours
Most professional formulas recommend waiting up to three days before washing, so the treatment can fully set into the hair.
Sulphate-Free, Always
A sulphate and sodium chloride-free shampoo is the single biggest factor in how long your results last.
No Tight Ties Early
Avoid tight ponytails, clips and buns in the first few days — they can set a bend into hair that is still stabilising.
Rinse After Swimming
Chlorine and salt water strip keratin quickly. Rinse with fresh water as soon as you can and follow with conditioner.
Ease Off the Heat
You will need far less heat styling now anyway. Use it, and the treatment lasts closer to the full three months.
Time Your Colour
Talk to your stylist about sequencing colour and keratin. Getting the order right protects both results.
