How To Wash Your Hair Like a Hairdresser

Ever wondered how to get fresh, clean hair like after a salon visit? You might be washing your hair wrong! When it comes to haircare, washing is the easiest step but the most misunderstood, with hair becoming dry and dull with over-washing, which raises the question, how often should we wash our hair? If you want clean, salon-ready hair, read our easy hair washing guide!

Thick, Coarse and Curly Hair

Thick, coarse hair can be difficult to manage even on the best days, so it’s especially important to get your washing schedule right. Thick hair is porous absorbing moisture more quickly, but it also means the hair is vulnerable to harsh cleansing agents stripping the hair of natural water and oils. Combine this with over washing, and you’ll have dry, thirsty strands in no time. While some recommend washing curly hair every two or three weeks to retain moisture, the build-up of oil on the scalp can actually cause flaking and irritation. We recommend a gentle cleansing routine using a sulphate-free shampoo to avoid overly stripping the hair and keeping it clean and nourished. Washing Recommendation: Loose, Wavy Hair – Three times per week. Medium Curls – Twice a week. Tight Curls – Once a week.

Fine, Thin Hair

If you have thin, fine hair, you probably know the struggle of oily roots even if you’ve just washed your hair. Unlike thick hair, which absorbs and hides oil at the roots, thin hair shows oil build-up more easily, resulting in over-washing to balance the hair. But like any good thing, too much can negatively affect the hair, which again strips the hair of natural oils, causing irritation and dry scalp. Instead, we recommend washing your hair less to let your hair and scalp balance out, adjusting to the change in cleansing. A good benchmark is to wash thin hair three times per week with a sulphate-free shampoo, which uses gentle cleansing agents instead of sulphates for a gentle but thorough clean. If you exercise regularly, substitute washing your hair with dry shampoo to keep your scalp balanced and in routine.

Expert Hair Washing Tips

  1. Ensure hair is completely wet, then apply a 20c size amount of shampoo in your palm.
  2. Working through the roots, gently massage sulphate-free shampoo through the scalp and down to the ends. This should take up to three minutes.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with warm to cool water and repeat if desired.
  4. Apply conditioner mid-length to the ends avoiding the scalp, and leave for three minutes.
  5. Rinse and gently dry, squeezing the hair with a towel.
  6. For best results, keep the water cool to close the hair cuticle for smooth lengths.
